Master of Science in Engineering Physics Degree project - Sébastien Hubert Supervisor: José M. Fernández-Varea (UB - Barcelona) Co-ordinator: Andras Kerek (KTH - Stockholm) Title: Tools for the Monte Carlo calculation of cellular S-values Abstract: S-values are used in diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine to estimate the absorbed dose received by organs or tumours following admisnistration of radiopharmaceuticals. Similarly, cellular S-values are the relevant quantities when the radionuclides are localized within the cell. In this seminar, i will present three alternative ways of calculating cellular S-values: full Monte Carlo simulation (using PENELOPE), the Dose Point Kernel approximation, and the stopping-power approximation. Results are presented for monoenergetic electron sources and simple beta emitters employed in nuclear medicine both for spherical and ellipsoidal cell shapes.
